DOL Connects with the Public through Blog: Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Data Released

Washington, D.C. – The Department of Labor (DOL) is committed to keeping the public informed about the latest unemployment insurance data. To achieve this, the DOL has launched a blog at https://blog.dol.gov where the public can access the latest information on unemployment insurance claims.

The DOL has released the latest seasonally adjusted data for the week ending February 3, 2024. The advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 218,000, a decrease of 9,000 from the previous week’s revised level. The 4-week moving average was 212,250, an increase of 3,750 from the previous week’s revised average.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.2 percent for the week ending January 27, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the previous week’s unrevised rate. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending January 27 was 1,871,000, a decrease of 23,000 from the previous week’s revised level.

The DOL also released unadjusted data for the week ending February 3. The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs totaled 232,727, a decrease of 31,192 (or -11.8 percent) from the previous week. The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.4 percent during the week ending January 27, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week.

In addition, the DOL reported that the total number of continued weeks claimed for benefits in all programs for the week ending January 20 was 2,212,470, an increase of 131,468 from the previous week. No state was triggered “on” the Extended Benefits program during the week ending January 20.

The DOL also provided information on initial claims for UI benefits filed by former Federal civilian employees and newly discharged veterans. In the week ending January 27, there were 502 initial claims filed by former Federal civilian employees, an increase of 82 from the prior week. There were also 370 initial claims filed by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 13 from the preceding week.
