A Note from Deputy Commerce Secretary Don Graves Commemorating Dr

A Message from Deputy Secretary of Commerce Don Graves on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day 2024

Dear colleagues,

As we approach this weekend, I want to take a moment to honor the remarkable life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This federal holiday holds a special significance as it is the only one designated as a National Day of Service. As we reflect on Dr. King’s impact on our world today, it is important that we also recognize the impact we can make by following his example.

In order to tackle the greatest challenges facing our country, we must work together. I urge you all to take time out of your weekend to give back to your communities through volunteering, charitable donations, or other activities that will help pave the way for a better tomorrow. Our friends at AmeriCorps have made it easier than ever to get involved by compiling a list of volunteer opportunities across the country at Americorps.gov/MLKDay.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. dedicated his entire life to fighting for a future he may never get to see. By using his example as our roadmap, we can all play a part in creating that future for generations to come. Let us come together to pay homage to Dr. King’s legacy and the legacies of so many others, and work towards building a fairer, brighter, and better America.

In the spirit of this day, I would also like to highlight the importance of census data in understanding and addressing issues of volunteerism, voting rights, education, and the economy. By utilizing this data, we can better understand the needs of our communities and work towards creating a more equitable society.

On this Martin Luther King Jr. Day, let us all recommit ourselves to the values of service, equality, and justice that Dr. King stood for. Together, we can continue his legacy and build a better future for all.

Happy Martin Luther King Day.

Sincerely,

Don Graves
Deputy Secretary of Commerce
