Transcript:

MARGARET BRENNAN: Today on Face The Nation, the leaders of the House Intelligence Committee, Republican Mike Turner and Democrat Jim Himes, join us to discuss the US response to recent Iranian attacks.

REP. MIKE TURNER: Thanks. Thank you for having us.

MARGARET BRENNAN: Chair Turner, you have been critical of the Biden administration’s handling of the recent Iranian attacks. Can you explain your concerns?

REP. MIKE TURNER: Margaret, the administration’s messaging on how to respond to these attacks has been inconsistent and confusing. They keep shifting their goals and objectives, which makes it difficult to understand their overall strategy towards Iran. We need a clear and unified response to deter future attacks and diminish Iran’s capabilities in the Middle East.

MARGARET BRENNAN: Congressman Himes, how do you respond to these criticisms?

REP. JIM HIMES: I respectfully disagree with Chairman Turner. It is important to make it clear to Iran and their proxies that attacks on US assets will not be tolerated. We must send a strong message that these attacks will come at a high cost.

MARGARET BRENNAN: Jake Sullivan, the National Security Adviser, has stated that the US is still assessing the effectiveness of the recent strikes on Iranian targets. What is your assessment, Chair Turner?

REP. MIKE TURNER: The strikes have not been effective in deterring future attacks. We have seen over 160 attacks from Iranian-backed militias, and the US response has been minimal. It is clear that these attacks are coming from Iran, and the administration needs to have a clear policy towards Iran to address these threats.

MARGARET BRENNAN: Congressman Himes, do you believe the strikes have been effective?

REP. JIM HIMES: It is too early to tell, but the message needs to be clear that attacks on US assets will not be tolerated. We must make it costly for Iran to continue these attacks.

MARGARET BRENNAN: Thank you both for joining us today to discuss this important issue.
