Transcript of an interview with Republican Senator James Lankford of Oklahoma on “Face the Nation” on January 28, 2024.

MARGARET BRENNAN: Good morning, Senator Lankford. It’s been four months since you started working on this bipartisan immigration deal. Do you have enough support from your fellow Republicans to pass it?

SEN. JAMES LANKFORD: It has taken longer than expected, but we are still working on finalizing the details of the bill. We want everyone to have a chance to read it before voting on it. Right now, there are a lot of false rumors circulating about the bill, so it’s important for everyone to see the actual details and understand the positive changes it will bring to our immigration system.

MARGARET BRENNAN: So you don’t have a vote count yet?

SEN. LANKFORD: No, we don’t have a vote count yet because everyone needs to read the bill first. However, the initial feedback has been positive.

MARGARET BRENNAN: Our immigration correspondent just outlined the new authorities in the bill. How do you balance the power to shut down the border with the right to claim asylum?

SEN. LANKFORD: This is similar to the authority we had under Title 42 during the pandemic. When we reach a crisis point where we can no longer process individuals at the border, we need the authority to turn them back to Mexico. This will prevent the chaos and strain on cities that are currently experiencing the effects of the Biden administration’s policy of releasing individuals into the country without proper processing.
