Republican lawmakers who criticized the events of January. 6 people currently supporting Trump

Lawmakers who previously condemned the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol are now endorsing former President Donald Trump for the 2024 White House run, despite his role in inciting the violence. Republican Congressman Lloyd Smucker, who had objected to the 2020 election results, strongly denounced the actions of the “extremists” and supported the prosecution of the insurrectionists. However, he and other GOP leaders have since shifted their stance and are now backing Trump’s potential return to the presidency. This change in attitude has been attributed to the growing influence of Trump and the shifting political landscape. Even those who voted to acquit Trump in his impeachment trial, such as Senator Steve Daines, have called for the prosecution of those involved in the attack. However, as Trump’s presence in the political arena remains strong, some lawmakers have aligned themselves with him in hopes of gaining favor and advancing their own political agendas.
