S. is strengthening the aerial defense capabilities at a military base in Jordan after a drone attack resulted in the deaths of three soldiers.

On January 30, 2024, President Biden announced that the U.S. will be sending additional air defenses to a base in northeast Jordan where three American soldiers were killed in a drone attack. The base, known as Tower 22, had not been previously targeted and did not have the same level of air defenses as other U.S. bases in Iraq and Syria. The attack, which occurred in the early morning and hit living quarters, is being investigated by the Defense Department. This is the first time a drone has landed on the Jordanian side of the border, and it is believed to be carried out by Iranian-backed groups. Since October 2023, there have been 165 attacks on U.S. forces in Iraq, Syria, and now Jordan. The Defense Department is working to determine how the drone was able to evade air defenses and cause casualties. CBS News’ National Security Correspondent David Martin contributed to this report.
