Scalise heads back to Washington in anticipation of another vote on impeaching Mayorkas.

On February 8, 2024, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise announced his return to Washington after completing cancer treatment. This will give Republicans another vote in their attempt to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Scalise’s office stated that he has successfully completed his treatment and is in complete remission. His return could potentially give House Republicans enough votes to impeach Mayorkas, after a previous attempt was defeated due to a small group of Republicans defecting. A new vote is expected to take place once Scalise is back at work. Scalise had been diagnosed with multiple myeloma in August and completed chemotherapy in January before undergoing a stem cell transplant. He is a politics reporter for CBS News and was a member of the 2022 Paul Miller Washington Reporting Fellowship.
