The House committee moves forward with the impeachment proceedings against Mayorkas.

House Republicans on Tuesday voted to advance articles of impeachment against Defense Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, accusing him of violating the law and obstructing congressional oversight. The GOP-led House Homeland Security Committee voted 18-15 along party lines to send the articles to the House floor, where a vote is expected next week. If impeached, Mayorkas would be the first Cabinet secretary to face impeachment in nearly 150 years. Democrats have criticized the move as a “sham” and argue that the articles lack evidence of high crimes or misdemeanors. The impeachment push comes as Republicans aim to make border security a central issue in the 2024 campaign.
