Investigation Results: The US Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division found that the franchise owner of Popeyes fast food chain was hiring children as young as 13 years old and minors who were working later and longer hours than allowed by child labor laws at the employer’s three locations in Oakland, Tracy, and Newark. Investigators also determined that the employer was not paying overtime wages for hours worked over 40 per week. This is the third time the division has cited the Oakland-based Popeyes franchisee for violating the Fair Labor Standards Act. Previous violations occurred at the Oakland and Tracy locations in 2003 and 2022, respectively.
