Transcript of Interview with Retired Gen. Frank McKenzie on Face The Nation, February 4, 2024

On February 4, 2024, retired Gen. Frank McKenzie, former chief of U.S. Central Command, was interviewed on Face The Nation. He discussed the current situation in the Middle East and the recent strikes against Iranian-backed militias in Iraq and Syria.

Host Margaret Brennan asked Gen. McKenzie about the impact of the strikes and he stated that it was too early to tell and that more work was needed. He also emphasized the importance of having a clear “end state” goal in the region, such as stopping attacks on U.S. bases and positions.

Brennan also brought up a previous statement made by Gen. McKenzie in a Wall Street Journal editorial, where he said that the U.S. needs to apply violence that Tehran understands in order to reset deterrence. When asked what that would look like, Gen. McKenzie stood by his words and stated that the U.S. needs to stop referencing not wanting to escalate and instead focus on reducing the danger of escalation to zero by leaving the region.

Overall, Gen. McKenzie provided important context on the situation in the Middle East and emphasized the need for a clear and effective strategy in dealing with Iranian-backed militias.
